Both Gujarat and Pune qualified for the playoffs once but neither could take the trophy home. Gujarat had a forgettable outing in the 2017 season where they finished in the bottom four. They suffered a defeat in their last match against SunRisers Hyderabad. Here’s a look at the GL playing XI from that game and where the 11 players are now.

Gujarat Lions Openers – Dwayne Smith and Ishan Kishan

The explosive duo of Dwayne Smith and Ishan Kishan opened the innings for GL. They added 111 runs for the first wicket, with both scoring a fifty. Smith shockingly never get an IPL contract after that, while Kishan plays for the Mumbai Indians.

Middle Order – Suresh Raina (c), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Aaron Finch, Ravindra Jadeja and James Faulkner

GL played with only three foreigners in their last match. They had an embarrassing collapse as they slumped from 111/0 to 154 all out. Raina, Karthik, Finch, Jadeja and Faulkner failed to impress with the bat. The all-rounders remained wicketless as well.

Faulkner also never played in the IPL after the 2017 season. Raina and Finch have now retired and work as cricket experts. Karthik plays for RCB, while Jadeja dons the CSK jersey.

Gujarat Lions Bowlers – Ankit Soni, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and Pradeep Sangwan

Ankit Soni was the only specialist spinner in the playing XI. Praveen Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/22. It was the last-ever IPL match for Soni, Kumar and Munaf Patel.

Left-arm pacer Pradeep Sangwan is still a part of the Gujarat franchise. He plays for the new Gujarat Titans team in IPL now.
