It will be a great chance for India to end the trophy drought at home. It is also the last chance for a few Indian players who might play in their last World Cup. Indian captain Rohit Sharma is one of them. We might see the last of Rohit with the Indian team.

Then the question will be: who will be India’s next captain across formats? Hardik Pandya has been handed the T20I captaincy, but who will be the next leader of the Indian team? Former Indian selector Kiran More hints at a possible candidate for India’s next captaincy.

In an interview on Jio Cinema, More praised Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal. In particular, he lauded Jaiswal and said that he is an all-format player who has done well in recent times. Notably, India has tried a number of captains in the last year or so.

More further said, “I am waiting for Gaikwad’s debut for the Test. He can play all formats, and his basics are very correct. Gaikwad can be the future captain of India. He is playing under MS Dhoni, so he must have learned things about handling the team and situations.”

Gaikwad is India’s captain for the Asian Games 2023. He is also the vice captain in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland. Another former selector, Saba Karim, reckons that Gaikwad was the first to establish himself in the international era among the other Indian youngsters.

Saba said that Jaiswal made a brilliant debut and scored a century and a half-century in the first two innings of his test debut. But he is in the line, as players like Gaikwad are in front of him. Both Jaiswal and Gaikwad will be seen in action on Sunday in the second game against Ireland.
