Piyush Chawla has opined that the Punjab Kings team management should have given more chances to Shahrukh Khan. Chawla, who is now a member of Star Sports Hindi commentary panel, said that the team management of the Punjab Kings invested a big amount in Khan’s services at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. However, they dropped him only after a few matches.
In an interaction with ESPNCricinfo ahead of Punjab Kings’ last match against the SunRisers Hyderabad, Piyush Chawla said that Shahrukh Khan bats at a difficult position. Hence, the team management should have backed him more, especially because they invested 9 crore in his services.
Talking about Khan’s numbers this season, the right-handed batter played only seven matches, scoring 98 runs at an average of 16.33. He smashed two fours and eight sixes this season, while his strike rate was 100. Here’s what Chawla had to say about him:
“You showed so much trust in Shahrukh Khan [in the auction]. His domestic season had gone so well. But you dropped him after just a few games. The kind of batter he should have got more chances. His batting spot is very difficult and you can’t expect him to win every game from there…“
Apart from Shahrukh Khan, Piyush Chawla also talked about Mayank Agarwal
During the same video, Piyush Chawla gave his views on Mayank Agarwal’s captaincy. Agarwal had captained the Punjab Kings in only one match prior to IPL 2022. The team management showed enormous faith in him this year as they retained him as their number one player and named him their new captain.
However, Agarwal could not perform well as a batter. He demoted himself from the opening position to the middle-order because of his string of failures. Piyush Chawla concluded by saying that captaincy is not everyone’s cup of tea.
