The 28th match of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League is currently underway, where the Punjab Kings are battling the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Mayank Agarwal was appointed the new captain of the Punjab Kings team ahead of the 2022 IPL season, but the right-handed batter is not playing in the match against SRH.

Instead of him, Shikhar Dhawan is captaining the Punjab-based franchise. Many fans were confused when they saw Dhawan at the toss instead of Mayank Agarwal.

Dhawan is an experienced leader, and he has captained the Indian cricket team at the international level as well. Here’s what Dhawan said at the toss about the change in captaincy:

“Mayank got hit on his toe, he should be fine for the next game. So, there’s just one change for us – Prabhsimran is in. We are performing well without depending on individuals – need to continue playing well as a unit, the bowling can get better, we’re working on it.”

Shikhar Dhawan played his last IPL match as captain against the Punjab Kings in 2014

Fans should note that this is not the first time Shikhar Dhawan is playing the captain’s role for any IPL franchise. In the past, he has been the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team. Interestingly, his last game as a captain of SRH came against the Punjab Kings team in 2014.

After that game, the team management assigned the reins of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team to Darren Sammy in that season before David Warner took over the captaincy. It will be interesting to see how Dhawan performs in his first-ever match as the captain of the Punjab Kings team.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad have won the toss and decided to field first. They have gotten off to a good start as Bhuvneshwar Kumar has dismissed skipper Dhawan in the 3rd over.
