The ICC T20 World Cup is currently taking place in the Middle East, with 16 teams from across the world participating. The inaugural edition of this mega event happened back in the year 2007. South Africa hosted that big tournament, and the Indian cricket team won the trophy.
Unlike 2021, there were only 12 teams in the ICC T20 World Cup 2007. In this article today, we will look at the captains of the 12 teams and where those players are now.
1. Australia – Adam Gilchrist
Australia reached the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2007 under Adam Gilchrist’s leadership. The wicket-keeper batter has now retired from all formats of cicket.
2. England – Paul Collingwood
Paul Collingwood took England to the Super 8s in the inaugural T20 WC. The former England captain is now the assistant coach of the England cricket team.
3. Pakistan – Shoaib Malik
The only T20 WC 2007 skipper playing in the ongoing T20 WC is Shoaib Malik. The all-rounder was a last-minute addition to Pakistan’s T20 WC squad in 2021.
4. New Zealand – Daniel Vettori
New Zealand reached the semifinals under Daniel Vettori’s captaincy in the 2007 T20 WC. He has retired now and tried his luck in coaching.
5. South Africa – Graeme Smith
Hosts South Africa finished third in their Super 8 group during the ICC T20 WC 2007. Graeme Smith, who is currently Cricket South Africa’s Director, captained them in that mega event.
6. Sri Lanka – Mahela Jayawardene
Mahela Jayawardene took the islanders to the Super 8s in ICC T20 WC 2007. Jayawardene was part of the Sri Lankan support staff in T20 WC 2021 but returned home early.
7. Kenya – Steve Tikolo
All-rounder Steve Tikolo led Kenya in their only T20 World Cup appearance. Tikolo is now the head coach of the Tanzanian cricket team.
8. Zimbabwe – Propser Utseya
Off-spinner Prosper Utseya led Zimbabwe in the 2007 T20 WC. Utseya’s bowling action came under the scanner in 2014. He has not played cricket since 2015.
9. West Indies – Ramnaresh Sarwan
West Indies lost both of their group stage matches and exited from the tournament early. Ramnaresh Sarwan captained the Caribbean side. He has retired now and works as a coach.
10. Bangladesh – Mohammad Ashraful
Mohammad Ashraful took Bangladesh to the Super 8 round in the inaugural T20 WC. Ashraful has lost his place in the Bangladeshi team but plays domestic cricket regularly.
11. India – MS Dhoni
India won the ICC T20 WC 2007 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 but is playing in the IPL. He is also India’s mentor for the 2021 T20 WC.
12. Scotland – Ryan Watson
Scotland participated in the 2007 T20 WC and played under Ryan Watson’s leadership. Watson announced his retirement a few years later and focused on coaching.
