“We were very clear with Shreyas” – Rohit Sharma reacts to Shreyas Iyer excluded from Playing XI in 1st T20I

After registering a 3-0 series win against the West Indies team in the recently concluded ODI series, Team India have got off to a winning start in the T20I series. However, due to the squad strength of the team, star middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer was made to sit on the bench for bench and Rohit Sharma has reacted to it.

The Indian team registered a comfortable victory against the West Indies cricket team in the first T20I match of the scheduled 3 match series between the sides.

First it was a brilliant display with the ball from the Indian bowling department. Debutant Ravi Bishnoi bundled 2 wickets, so did Harshal Patel, while everyone else scalped 1 wicket each.

The Indian batting order did not had a huge huddle in the chase for 158 runs except for when Ishan Kishan and Virat Kohli both departed on the very same over. However, Suryakumar Yadav ensured a smooth run chase along with Venkatesh Iyer. Earlier, captain Rohit Sharma had smashed 40 runs of 19 balls.

However, even Team India picked up a comfortable victory, due to the squad strength of the team, an important player like Shreyas Iyer had to sit out for the match to accommodate both Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer, now Shreyas’ KKR teammate.

Rohit Sharma opens up on Shreyas Iyer

Speaking on it, captain Rohit Sharma stated in the post-match press conference that the team is very clear with Shreyas Iyer with the need for the moment before the T20 World Cup 2022.

Sharma added that it is hard on Shreyas Iyer to having to sit on the bench and not making it to the Playing XI as it is what the team requires.

He further added that having so much options creates challenges for the other to make it back to the Playing XI and said it is great to have that than having nothing.

He said that the team is very clear with Shreyas Iyer about the need of the hour, “We were very clear with Shreyas Iyer, we told him that the team wants that option (having an all-rounder) going into the World Cup.”

He completed saying that the players are all smart guys and professional and understands that the team comes first.

With that win, Team India have already taken a 1-0 lead in the 3 match series. The remaining matches will take place on the 18th and the 20th of February at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
