In a disappointing development for the Mumbai Indians fans, the team’s star top-order batter Suryakumar Yadav is unlikely to play in their first match of IPL 2022. The new season will begin on March 26. MI will start their campaign against Delhi Capitals in a rematch of IPL 2020 Final.

Yadav has been a match-winner for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Plus, the matches will happen in Mumbai and Pune this year. Yadav has a lot of experience of playing in Maharashtra, which is why his absence will hurt the Mumbai-based franchise’s balance.

It will be interesting to see if Yadav manages to play the match. As per a BCCI source, he is currently in NCA recovering from an injury. He missed the T20I series against the Sri Lankan cricket team because of the injury. Here’s what a source informed PTI:

“Surya is currently at the NCA doing his rehabilitation. He is well on his way to recovery but there is a possibility that his participation in the opening game will be a real touch and go affair. So there could be a possibility that he might be advised by the board’s medical team to not risk playing the opener.”

Mumbai Indians may try Anmolpreet Singh or Dewald Brevis in the absence of Suryakumar Yadav

Mumbai Indians do not have experienced batter Saurabh Tiwary in their IPL 2022 squad. Usually, he would replace any Indian batter in the MI squad who was unavailable or out of form.

The options that MI have are Anmolpreet Singh, Dewald Brevis, Ramandeep Singh and Aryan Juyal. It will be interesting to see which player joins Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tim David, Kieron Pollard and Tilak Verma in the MI batting order for the first match of the season. Also, Yadav still has a chance of playing.
