In a surprising development ahead of IPL 2022, the BCCI has changed some important rules for the new season. One of the biggest changes has been made to the Super Over rule. The new rule states that if a Super Over or the subsequent one is not possible due to any reasons during the playoffs, then the team that finishes higher on the points table will win the match.
The rule is also applicable to the final match. So, finishing number one on the points table has become a very important thing in the IPL. As per Cricbuzz, here’s what the new playing conditions regarding the result of a tied match state ahead of IPL 2022:
“If conditions do not permit a Super Over, or subsequent Super Overs within the time available to determine the winner as described, then the team which, at the end of the relevant regular season, finished in the higher position in the league table will be deemed the winner of the relevant play-off match.”
Normally, both teams play a over each after the match ends in a tie. The team that scores more runs in that over wins the game. In case there is a tie in the number of runs scored during those deliveries, then there is one more repetition of the same, with different players. Only once have fans witnessed double Super Overs in IPL.
It was between the Mumbai Indians and the Punjab Kings during the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Fans expect multiple Super Over contests in IPL 2022
IPL 2022 features 10 teams. All franchises have strong squads on paper. It is tough to predict which team will win the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Since the teams are equally matched and there is no home advantage, there should be more tied encounters this year. IPL 2022 will start on March 26 in Mumbai.
