Former Australian cricket team captain Mark Taylor has opined that Joe Root can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs by a player in Test cricket history. Root became the joint youngest player to score 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game earlier today while playing against the New Zealand cricket team at the Lord’s cricket ground.

Root smacked a match-winning century in the fourth innings to help the England cricket team win the first match of the ICC World Test Championship series against the New Zealand cricket team by five wickets. During the innings, he completed 10,000 runs in Test cricket.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match ended, former Australian cricket team skipper Mark Taylor opined that Joe Root still has minimum five years of Test cricket left in him, which is why he could break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record for the most runs.

“Root has minimum five years left in him, so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable. Root is batting as well as I have ever seen him bat over the last 18 months to two years. He is in the prime of his career, so there is 15,000 runs-plus for him if he stays healthy.”

Mel Jones feels Joe Root can score 16,000 runs in his Test career

Sachin Tendulkar ended his Test career with 15,921 runs to his name. Root is still 5,906 runs short of that, and the England cricket team batter is currently 31 years old. During the same discussion on Sky Sports, Mel Jones chimed in and said that Root can even end up with 16,000 or 17,000 runs to his name in Test cricket.

It will be interesting to see if Joe can break that record. His current focus will be to help the England cricket team win their ongoing ICC World Test Championship series against the New Zealand cricket team. Also, England have a chance of saving a Test series against India by defeating them in the fifth Test later this year.
