Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody was surprised after the 3rd umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan adjudged Kane Williamson out after a controversial catch. During the fifth match of the IPL 2022 season, Williamson’s SRH team battled the Rajasthan Royals.

Williamson won the toss and elected to field first. A fine half-century from captain Sanju Samson helped the Rajasthan Royals post a 210-run total on the board in their first innings. Chasing 211 to register their maiden win in IPL 2022, Hyderabad lost wickets at regular intervals. They only had 14 runs on the board at the end of the powerplay.

Captain Kane Williamson was one of the two opening batters for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He could not impress much as he managed only two runs off seven deliveries. However, his dismissal was controversial. Williamson edged a delivery from Prasidh Krishna to wicket-keeper Sanju Samson. The RR captain failed to complete the catch.

The ball rebound and the slip fielder Devdutt Padikkal grabbed it. On-field umpires asked the third umpire to make the decision. The slow-motion replays suggested that the ball probably hit the ground before Padikkal took the catch. However, the third umpire adjudged the batter out.

We were very surprised that it was given out: Tom Moody

Speaking after his team’s defeat against the Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody gave his views on the controversial decision and said:

“We were very surprised that it was given out, particularly when we saw the replay. I can understand the on-field umpires taking it upstairs. When that happened, we saw the evidence. We are certainly not umpires but it looked pretty clear to us what the [correct] decision was.”

Sunrisers Hyderabad are currently last on the points table with the worst net run rate among all teams. They will be keen to bounce back when they battle the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday.
