The Indian team ended the opening day at 336/6, and a total of 93 overs took place. It was one and only Yashasvi Jaiswal who dominated throughout the day and went on to notch his second test ton. He made sure that he was not throwing the ball and converted it into a big one.

The Southpaw ended the day with an unbeaten 179 off 257 balls, including 17 fours and 5 sixes. He went past his highest test score of 171 runs, which he made in his debut inning. With this, Jaiswal also registered his name in the record books.

He broke the 60-year-old record set by former batter Budhi Kunderan and registered the most runs by an Indian batter against India on Day 1 of a test. Kunderan scored 170 not out in a test in Chennai in 1964. Jaiswal now holds this record.

Apart from this, the left-hander also scored the sixth most runs on Day 1 of a test match. Virender Sehwag (228 vs PAK), Virender Sehwag (195 vs AUS), Wasim Jaffer (192 vs PAK), Shikhar Dhawan (190 vs SL), and Virender Sehwag (180 vs WI) are ahead of him.

Jaiswal also equaled Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the second-most runs for an Indian against England in a single day of a test. Gavaskar made 179 runs at the Oval in a test in 1979. The record for the most runs is held by Karun Nair, who scored 232 runs in Chennai in 2016, when he scored a triple century.
