ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will happen this June in the United States and West Indies. It will be a mega event featuring 20 teams. The Indian team automatically qualified for the tournament because of its Top 2 finish in the Super 12 points table of the previous T20 World Cup.
India also hosted the ICC World Cup 2023, which was played in the ODI format. Despite defeating all the teams in the league stage, the Men in Blue failed to lift the trophy as they lost against Australia in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Now, the Indian team will aim to win the T20 World Cup, with a majority of the players from the 2023 WC playing as well. However, the following two batters might not get a place.
1. Shreyas Iyer might be in reserves for ICC T20 World Cup 2024
Selectors and coaches have changed in the last three years, but Shreyas Iyer’s place in the T20I squad remains uncertain. He was vice-captain in the last two T20Is against Australia, but he was ignored for the T20Is against Afghanistan. With Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube available as middle-order options, Shreyas might have to wait.
Like 2021 and 2022, Shreyas Iyer may find his name in the list of reserve players once again. If needed, he can come into the main squad as a replacement.
2. Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill has witnessed a massive dip in form in T20is. Ever since his century against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, Gill has not played a big knock in the shortest format of the game. The Prince might have to wait for his first T20 World Cup match because Yashasvi Jaiswal has been performing exceptionally well. Rohit Sharma is back as the captain, and he will open the innings as well.
