ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will happen in five months. This year, West Indies and USA will co-host the mega event. 20 teams will participate in the competition, with inaugural champions India being one of them. The Indian team will have to make some tough calls when selecting the T20 World Cup squad.
The reason behind it is that India have entered the competition as the strongest team on many occasions, but they have found a way to lose the matches which matter the most.
BCCI’s selection committee will have to make some big calls, and here’s a look at the two wicketkeepers who played in ICC World Cup 2023, but they might not get a place in the T20 World Cup 2024.
1. KL Rahul might not play in ICC T20 World Cup 2024
With the rise of players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul will likely not get an opportunity to open the innings for India. He was the team’s opener in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022. With Rohit Sharma back as an opener, one spot is already locked.
Rahul may try to sneak into the squad as a middle-order batter. However, he will face tough competition from the likes of Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. It seems improbable that Rahul will be back in T20Is.
“You might see KL Rahul at No. 4. If he wants to play the World Cup, he probably needs to bat at No. 4,” Aakash Chopra recently said on YouTube while discussing LSG’s IPL strategy.
2. Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan seems to have been gone out of favor of the selectors due to mental fatigue break. As per reports, the team management was not happy with him. Hence, Kishan may not get the ticket to the T20 World Cup, which will happen later this year.
