Virat Kohli is regarded by many as the best Test captain of all time. He brought about a revolution in Indian cricket after taking over the Test team’s captaincy in 2015. MS Dhoni shockingly announced his retirement from Test cricket, and soon after, Kohli became the full-time skipper of the team.

Under his leadership, the Indian team won overseas Tests consistently. They dominated Australia on their own soil and gained a 2-1 lead in the series against England last year. Unfortunately, because of miscommunication with selectors and lack of clarity, Kohli decided to step down as Test captain earlier this year.

Rohit Sharma became the new Test captain of India after that, but now, the BCCI has decided to adopt split captaincy. It is unclear if split captaincy is just for ODIs and T20Is or all three formats, but in case it is for all three formats, then here are two reasons why Virat should be the Test captain again.

    1. Virat Kohli never wanted to leave Test captaincy

A player and a captain like Kohli come around once in a generation. He is a different individual altogether when he is the captain.

It was disappointing to see how he left captaincy because he is not someone who would quit an important position in the middle of a Test Championship. Hence, he should be asked if he wants to become captain again. Also, he rarely has any injury or fitness issue, meaning one leader will continue to lead in all matches.

    2. Rohit Sharma can focus solely on ODI World Cup

Rohit Sharma could not win the T20 World Cup as captain, but he has a golden chance of etching his name in the history books by leading India to the ODI World Cup title next year.

Since the mega event will take place in India, Rohit should have better planning for the ODI World Cup. The fan expectations will be sky high. If he does not have Test captaincy burden, it will be better for him as an individual.
