Kaviya Maran has made a host of suggestions to BCCI in the meeting of IPL auction which happened last night in Mumbai. Maran is the owner of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in the league, which finished runners-up in the most recent edition of the tournament.

Since the Hyderabad-based franchise finally got its squad right after four seasons, Maran is against the idea of a mega auction with four or five retentions. She wants seven retentions. While the SRH owner made some valid suggestions like allowing the cap on the number of foreign players a team can retain, here are two points from Maran which the IPL council may not approve.

    1. Suggestion of Kaviya Maran about CSK’s rule may not be approved

CSK have asked the BCCI to bring back the old IPL rule, wherein if a player has been retired from international cricket for five or more years, he becomes an uncapped player. The Chennai-based franchise wants this rule back so that MS Dhoni qualifies as an uncapped player for the next season.

“Senior players have immense value in the IPL. They bring experience and some also bring brand value. By restricting their value to the uncapped amount we are disrespecting the player and his value. Some retired players can go for much more in the auction than being retained as uncapped pre-auction,” Maran told Cricbuzz.

Maran’s suggestion might not be approved because this rule existed in the IPL from 2008 to 2021. Also, it will be beneficial for IPL if Dhoni plays.

    2. Maran wants BCCI to remove pre-decided retention salary

Maran has suggested that BCCI should remove their pre-decided retention salary caps, means the pre-decided rate of 16 crore, 12 crore, 8 crore and so on will not be applicable. Instead, the teams will have to negotiate the price with players for the auction.

While the suggestion makes sense, the BCCI may not make this decision. The reason behind it is that it makes things interesting while retaining or releasing players.
