IPL 2025 will likely have a mega auction. It means that the teams will have to release a majority of their players from the current squad. The last mega auction happened in the year 2022, when Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants joined the competition. While there will not be any new teams in 2025, a mega auction may occur.
There have been various suggestions and reports about the various IPL mega auction rules. One of the suggestions was from KKR CEO Venky Mysore, who suggested that teams should have zero retentions but eight RTM cards, so that they can retain their core and also the players get their real money’s worth instead of settling for the retention money.
Whether BCCI follows Venky’s suggestion or not, but here’s a list of two IPL teams which might want to retain zero players before the new season.
1. Punjab Kings may hit the reboot button in IPL 2025
It’s time for another reset for the Punjab Kings, who have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2014 season. One cannot entirely blame the Kings owners this time because they kept the core of the team intact across the three seasons. However, injuries to main players and lack of team work resulted in Punjab’s failure.
Some of their most expensive picks could not justify their price tags. Hence, PBKS could think of releasing all players and forming a completely new team.
2. Lucknow Super Giants
Lucknow Super Giants had the strongest team on paper in 2022 and 2023. However, they lost in the Eliminator match of both seasons. Looking at what happened between captain KL Rahul and owner Goenka, it seems likely that Rahul is done with LSG. Perhaps, Lucknow can make a fresh start next season with a new captain and a new bunch of players.
