ODI World Cup 2007 and T20 World Cup 2024 have one common thing. While the 2007 ODI WC happened entirely in the West Indies, the Caribbean islands have played host to a majority of the matches in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. The United States have also hosted some of the matches.
Like the 2007 ODI WC, the 2024 T20 WC had a group stage, where teams were divided into four groups, and the two teams advanced to the Super 8s round. There were some shocking eliminations in the two tournaments’ group stage.
Although the conditions in West Indies have not changed, the following two teams who made it to the semifinals of the 2007 ODI WC have been eliminated from the 2024 T20 WC’s group stage.
1. Sri Lanka were finalists in the 2007 ODI World Cup
Sri Lankan cricket team’s prime ranged from 2007 to 2015. They made it to the finals of the 2007 and 2011 ODI WC, while in the year 2014, they won the T20 World Cup. 10 years later, Sri Lanka could not even progress beyond the group stage of the T20 WC.
The island nation were in Group D along with South Africa, Nepal, Bangladesh and Netherlands. Although the group had two associate nations, Sri Lanka managed only one win and crashed out of the tournament.
2. New Zealand
New Zealand have been quite consistent when it comes to performing at the ICC events. They had made it to the second round in each of the T20 World Cup tournaments played before this one. The streak came to an end in 2024.
The Kiwis lost their group stage matches against Afghanistan and West Indies. Despite registering grand wins against Papua New Guinea and Uganda, the Blackcaps missed out on the Super 8s.
