Ricky Ponting is likely to lose his position as the Delhi Capitals head coach by IPL 2024. The former Australian captain did a great job from 2019 to 2021, helping DC qualify for the playoffs in every season. However, the team’s performance has declined after the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.
DC have probably the best group of coaches in the IPL, with the likes of Shane Watson, Pravin Amre, James Hopes and Sourav Ganguly being present with Ricky Ponting. However, the team’s performance has not been up to the mark. In IPL 2023 so far, the Capitals have suffered five defeats in five matches and are the only team with zero points in the standings.
According to reports, DC’s owners are looking to trim their coaching staff. Here’s a list of the three big names whom DC could approach as their new head coach for IPL 2024.
1. Virender Sehwag can replace Ricky Ponting as Delhi Capitals head coach
Virender Sehwag was the first captain of the Delhi franchise in the Indian Premier League. The team finished in the Top 4 multiple times under his leadership. Sehwag has also worked with the Punjab Kings as a coach in the past.
The former Indian opener is a well-known face in Delhi. Plus, he has a great amount of experience as well, which is why Delhi can think of signing him.
2. Justin Langer can replace Ricky Ponting as Delhi Capitals head coach
If DC want to persist with an Australian coach, then Justin Langer can be a great choice. Under his guidance, Australia won the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. He is a great coach who will bring a lot of experience to the table.
3. Kevin Pietersen
Kevin Pietersen is a former captain of the Delhi franchise as well. Pietersen was one of the first superstars of the modern T20 era. He can bring fresh energy to the DC camp.
