World Cup and IPL are two of the most followed cricket tournaments in the world. It is the dream of every player to win both the tournaments. In the same way, even the coaches aim to lead their teams to the title at the two mega events.
The Indian Premier League and the Cricket World Cup have an almost similar format, where the teams need to face all other teams and then the best four teams qualify for the next round. The coaches need to bring the best out of their players in these tournaments to ensure the best results.
While the World Cup is an international team event and IPL is a league, there have been three such instances when an IPL franchise hired a coach after he had won the international mega event.
1. Gary Kirsten joined IPL after leading India to the World Cup win in 2011
Gary Kirsten was the head coach of the Indian cricket team that won the World Cup in the year 2011. After coaching the Indian team, Kirsten had a stint with the South African cricket team as well. Next, he joined the Delhi Daredevils and the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
While Kirsten was not so successful with Delhi and Bangalore, he has achieved enormous success as a part of the Gujarat Titans backroom staff in the last two years.
2. Geoff Marsh joined IPL after leading Australia to the World Cup in 1999
Geoff Marsh was the head coach of the Australian cricket team that won the World Cup in the year 1999. Marsh later joined the Pune Warriors India team in IPL as a head coach in 2010/11. While Pune Warriors owners had high hopes from him, the World Cup-winning coach did not achieve much success in the league.
3. Justin Langer
Justin Langer guided the Australian cricket team to the T20 World Cup title in the year 2021. Two years after that triumph, Langer has now joined the Lucknow Super Giants IPL franchise as their head coach. He has replaced Andy Flower as the LSG head coach.
