In the current era, it is common to witness players retiring from international cricket to take part in T20 leagues. However, a few are playing First Class Cricket after their retirement. Here, we take a look at three cricketers who retired long ago from international cricket but are still active in County.
In the County Championship, a few players do not ply their trade in the hope of landing a spot in their national squads. Playing in the County alone is seen as a profession and a few succeed at it. Hence, it makes sense that even after retirement, a few play in this tournament.
1) Alastair Cook
The biggest example, in this regard, is former English skipper Alastair Cook. Once seen as a batter who had a chance to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record, Cook suffered a drop in form and later retired from the game. However, since then, he has been very active in domestic cricket. He has also been doing well in the competition. Amidst this, he also takes up a few gigs in the commentatory panel.
2) Colin de Grandhomme
Colin de Grandhomme is one of the cricketers who retired long ago from international cricket but is still active in the County Championship. It was a surprise when the Kiwi all-rounder announced his retirement from all forms of the game. While many expected him to completely focus on T20s, the all-rounder is currently playing in the County Championship. While it is not expected that he would make a comeback, his presence will surely help the team.
3) Suranga Lakmal
Suranga Lakmal is an under-rated cricketer in recent times. He picked a lot of wickets and was one of the consistent performers for Sri Lanka when the team was going through a transition. Even he is currently playing in the County. That said, it needs to be seen if he would continue playing because his contract would be over after the end of the season.
