Run-out at the non-striker’s end, previously known as Mankad dismissal in cricket, is a way through which the bowler can dismiss a batter without even bowling a delivery. There are two batters in the middle during a cricket match.

When the bowler starts his run-up and reaches near the bowling crease, there is some time for the non-striker to leave his crease and take an unfair advantage to complete a run. It is very hard for a fast bowler to stop his run-up and focus on the non-striker leaving the crease, but multiple spin bowlers have dismissed the non-striker’s end batters by run-out in this fashion.

The most popular dismissal that comes to the mind is of R Ashwin dismissing Jos Buttler during an IPL match between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Earlier this year, Indian women’s cricketer Deepti Sharma did the same thing in a match against the England women’s cricket team.

The batters at the non-striker’s end have now brought up new techniques to save themselves from this way of dismissal. Here are the three most unique ways where batters saved themselves from run-out.

    1. Glenn Phillips’ technique to avoid Mankad run-out

New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips became the second player to smash a hundred in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 tournament. Phillips accomplished the feat while playing against the Sri Lankan cricket team. During his innings, he was spotted taking a pose in the way runners do for a 100 meters sprint. He gained momentum and stayed in his crease as well with this technique.

    2. Virat Kohli

In a T20I match against the West Indies cricket team, Virat Kohli stretched his body in such a manner that he saved himself from the run-out. The bowler was in disbelief as Kohli did a 2.16 meter stretch.

    3. Virat Kohli saving himself from mankad

Kohli features on the list again because of an incident from the RCB vs KKR match in IPL 2019. Sunil Narine was the bowler, and Kohli saved himself by putting his bat back as visible in the photo above.
