Playing in the ICC World Cup is the dream of every cricketer. However, the team selection process is quite difficult, and the selectors have to make some tough calls for the World Cup squad. Many times, the selection committee has disappointed the fans by leaving out experienced players.
For example, a lot of Indian fans were left disappointed after seeing that neither Shikhar Dhawan nor Yuzvendra Chahal received a place in the squad. 1. Angelo Mathews returns for ICC World Cup 2023
Angelo Mathews made a surprising return to Sri Lanka’s squad as an injury replacement in the 2023 World Cup. He replaced Matheesha Pathirana in the squad, and just two days after joining the team, he played against England, where he picked up two crucial wickets for the island nation.
2. Ravichandran Ashwin returns for ICC World Cup 2023
Another experienced Asian player to make a return for the ongoing World Cup was Ravichandran Ashwin. The off-spinner joined the Indian squad as an injury replacement for Axar Patel. Ashwin took one wicket against Australia in the first match.
3. Imran Khan
Former Pakistan all-rounder Imran Khan had announced retirement after the 1987 World Cup. However, he came out of retirement for the 1992 World Cup and ended up leading Pakistan to their maiden World Cup title as the captain.
4. Javagal Srinath
Javagal Srinath suddenly announced retirement from cricket after the 2002 West Indies tour. Upon captain Sourav Ganguly’s insistence, Srinath came out of retirement for the 2003 World Cup and reached the finals with the Indian team.
