Running out a non-striker without bowling the delivery is one of the most controversial forms of dismissals in cricket history. Several Indian players have dismissed the opposition team’s players using this tactic.
Earlier, there used to be a Spirit of Cricket debate every time this thing happened. Sometimes, a batter was even allowed to continue with a warning. However, ICC has changed the rule now and updated it as a legal form of dismissal. It is no longer a debate of Spirit of Cricket as the bowler officially has the right to dislodge bails at the non-striker’s end when the batter is out of his crease.
Over the years, four popular Indian players have executed this form of the dismissal while playing international cricket or IPL. Here’s a list of those four names:
1. One of the current Indian players – Deepti Sharma
Indian women’s player Deepti Sharma executed this form of dismissal while playing for the Indian women’s cricket team in the third ODI against the England women’s cricket team yesterday. It was the last wicket of England, and Deepti ran out Charlie Dean to help the Women in Blue win the match.
2. One of the current Indian players – Ravichandran Ashwin
In the 2019 IPL season, Punjab Kings captain Ravichandran Ashwin ran out a well-set Rajasthan Royals batter Jos Buttler. It caused a massive controversy, but eventually Buttler was given out.
3. Kapil Dev
Former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev was the first Indian player to execute this dismissal in ODI cricket. He did it against South Africa by dismissing Peter Kirsten.
4. Vinoo Mankad
For a long time, this form of dismissal was called Mankading because Vinoo Mankad was the first to dismiss Bill Brown in this fashion. He did against Australia at Syndey back in 1947-48.
