Punjab Kings once again failed to qualify for the playoffs in the Indian Premier League. Despite assembling a strong squad for IPL 2023, PBKS finished in the lower half of the points table. They are currently eighth in the points table, having no chance of qualifying for the next round. Punjab Kings may make some big changes ahead of IPL 2024.

Almost a decade has passed since the Kings finished in the Top 4 of the points table. This year, they had a strong squad on paper, but they could not execute their plans well. Here’s a look at the four players from the current squad whom the Punjab Kings might release before the IPL 2024 Auction.

    1. Punjab Kings may not retain Matthew Short for IPL 2024

Matthew Short joined PBKS as a replacement for Jonny Bairstow ahead of IPL 2023. Fans had high hopes from the Australian star, but he could not match the expectations. With Bairstow likely to play for PBKS next season, Short may lose his contract.

    2. Bhanuka Rajapaksa might be released by Punjab Kings before IPL 2024

Another overseas batter who could not live up to the expectations in this season was Sri Lanka’s wicket-keeper Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Jonny Bairstow can play the foreign wicket-keeper batter’s role for PBKS next season. Hence, Rajapaksa may lose his place in the squad.

    3. Rishi Dhawan

It was baffling to see how the Punjab Kings used Rishi Dhawan in IPL 2023. He is one of the top all-rounders in Indian domestic cricket right now, but PBKS rarely used him to his full potential. Often there were times when Shikhar Dhawan neither used him as a batter or a bowler in the game. It is better for both parties if Rishi goes into the auction.

    4. Mohit Rathee

Uncapped all-rounder Mohit Rathee played one match for the Punjab Kings this season. He scored one run and conceded 29 runs in his two wicketless overs. It should not be a surprise if the Kings do not retain him for the next season.
