Mumbai Indians has been one of the most successful teams in terms of winning the IPL and yet when it comes to retention, a lot of factors change.
Back in 2011, when the first retention and releases were done, they retained four of their key players. So where are they now? As we warm up for the IPL 2025 retention and releases, here are the four players whom Mumbai retained back then and what are they doing now.
#1 Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar has always been the biggest name in cricket and MI decided to keep him in their side back in 2011, not just for cricket but also for his overall brand. We all know that Sachin still continues to be the global ambassador of multiple projects while being a part of a few masters’ league across the globe as well.
#2 Harbhajan Singh
Despite being one of the key off-spinners in the history of Indian cricket, Harbhajan’s legacy in IPL was bit of a mixed bag. However, in 2011, he proved to be a vital cog in the side of MI and was retained by the Men in Blue. Harbhajan currently is a broadcaster and is also playing across various masters’ leagues across the globe.
#3 Kieron Pollard
Pollard turned out to be one of the best in business of all times and by the time Mumbai Indians could actually get themselves up and running, Pollard continued to hunt the bowlers and the batters equally. He is currently the assistant coach of the England cricket team and was appointed in December 2023.
#4 Lasith Malinga
Lasith Malinga who has been one of the mainstays of the MI side of all times, was retained back in 2011 and what followed thereafter was stuff of sheer gold. Malinga is currently the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians apart from his various endorsements in the world of media.
