The player who performs the best in the 50-over format of the game wins this award. Over the last few years, some of the greatest players of world cricket like Kumar Sangakkara, Andrew Flintoff, Kevin Pietersen, Michael Hussey, Matthew Hayden and Rohit Sharma have won this award. However, none of the names mentioned above could win the award in consecutive years.

Four cricketers have achieved the unique feat of winning the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year award in back-to-back years. Here’s a list of the four names:

    1. MS Dhoni won ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2008 and 2009

Former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni was the first cricketer to achieve this record. The International Cricket Council named him the ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2008 and then again in 2009. Dhoni was the greatest finisher in the international arena at that time, and his wicket-keeping skills and captaincy were top notch as well.

    2. AB de Villiers won ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2014 and 2015

Former South African cricket team skipper AB de Villiers also achieved this feat. He won his first ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2010, but Kumar Sangakkara won it in 2011. AB de Villiers jumped back to the top and won the award in 2014 and 2015, becoming the second player to win the award in consecutive years.

    3. Virat Kohli

It should not be a surprise that Virat Kohli features on the list. The current Indian batter won the award in 2017 and 2018. He was at his supreme peak in ODI cricket in 2018 as he destroyed almost every opposition that he played against.

    4. Babar Azam

Current Pakistan captain Babar Azam is the latest name to accomplish the feat. Azam won the award in 2021 and 2022, becoming the first player from Pakistan to win back-to-back ODI Cricketer of the Year awards.
