IPL is the most competitive T20 league on the planet right now. The world’s best cricketers assemble at one place and get divided into various squads while participating in the IPL. All franchises have world-class coaching staffs comprising some of the biggest legends in cricket’s history.
However, it is pertinent to note that some of the current IPL team coaches once went under the hammer at the auctions during their time as an active player, and surprisingly, none of the franchises raised their peddle for them. In this listicle today, we will look at five such IPL team coaches.
1. Brian Lara – Went unsold in IPL 2011 Auctions

The new batting coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad entered the IPL Mega Auction in 2011, but since the Caribbean star had passed his prime, none of the franchises showed interest in his services. Fans should note that it was a 10-team auction in 2011.
2. Dale Steyn – Went unsold multiple times
Dale Steyn is reckoned by many as one of the greatest bowlers in cricket history, but the IPL franchises do not consider the past records only while bidding for players at the auction. Steyn went unsold in 2018, 2019 and 2020. RCB bought him as a replacement in 2019 and signed him in the second round of 2020 auction. The retired player is the new fast bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad.
3. Hemang Badani – Unsold in IPL Auctions 2014

Another member of the Sunrisers Hyderabad coaching staff to feature on the list is Hemang Badani. The fielding coach and talent scout of SRH entered the mega auction 2014 but returned without a contract.
4. Mahela Jayawardene – Unsold in IPL Auction 2016
Negi who hasn’t played a single ODI goes for 8+ crores, Jayawardene with 400 odd ODIs is unsold? Strange are the ways of IPL!! #IPLAuction
