Scoring an overseas Test century is the dream of every batter in cricket. Generally, the batters have a great record in home conditions because they have grown up playing matches in the same conditions right from the starting days of their career.
However, when a batter travels overseas, the conditions are different. Indian batters have had a hard time scoring big runs consistently away from home. At times, lower order batters have stood up and delivered the goods for the team. Here’s a list of five Indian batters who have scored an overseas Test century at the number eight position.
1. Kapil Dev – 1st Indian to score overseas Test century at number eight
The first Indian to achieve this feat was the 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev. He achieved the feat while playing for India in a Test match against the England cricket team at the Oval back in the year 1990.
2. Ajay Ratra
A rather surprising name to feature on the list is Ajay Ratra. The former Indian player scored a hundred away from home, that too at the number eight position. It came in the year 2002 at the St. Johns venue.
3. Ajit Agarkar
Current Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar smashed a hundred at number eight in the same year as Ajay Ratra. It was against England though, and it came at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
4. Anil Kumble
Former Indian captain Anil Kumble was known for his leg-spin bowling. However, in the English summer of 2007, Kumble smashed a magnificent Test hundred against the England cricket team at number eight at The Oval.
5. Nitish Reddy – 1st Indian to score overseas Test century at number 8 in Australia
The first Indian cricketer to score a Test hundred at number eight on Australian soil is none other than the newest superstar of the team, Nitish Reddy. He is currently unbeaten, having crossed the 100-run mark against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
