It is quite normal to see captains of national team being the skipper of their country’s franchise league. For example, MS Dhoni was the captain of Chennai Super Kings and India, while Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore when he was leader of the Indian team.
However, there are also a few captains, who do not get the chance to lead a team in their nation’s T20 league. They have to play under someone else’s captaincy in the competition as the captain is decided by the team owners. Here’s a list of five such instances.
1. One of the best captains of all time – Rohit Sharma
Indian captain Rohit Sharma jointly owns the record for the most IPL titles, having led Mumbai Indians to five championships. However, Sharma was sacked as MI captain in 2023, with Hardik Pandya taking his place.
2. One of the top captains right now – Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins rarely plays in Big Bash League. He is the captain of the Australian cricket team, but he joined Sydney Thunder as a supplementary player in the ongoing BBL season.
3. Temba Bavuma
Temba Bavuma is the skipper of the South African side, but in the SA20 league, he remained unsold initially. Then, he joined Sunrisers Eastern Cape as a replacement, where he played under Aiden Markram.
4. Babar Azam
Babar Azam played under the captaincy of all-rounder Imad Wasim when he was Pakistan’s T20I captain in 2020. It was in PSL 2020, where Wasim was the skipper of the Karachi Kings team.
5. Monank Patel
India-born player Monank Patel is the captain of the United States of America cricket team. However, in USA’s Major League Cricket, he played under the leadership of Kieron Pollard for MI New York.
