IPL is considered the most competitive domestic cricket league on the planet. It is the only competition, where the active Indian players share the dressing rooms with the foreign stars. There are no major international matches happening during the IPL season, showing the significance of this tournament.

Generally, the fans expect high-scoring encounters in the IPL. However, some times a team has an off day with the bat. None of their batsmen are able to dominate the game, resulting in low scores. While a few teams have at least managed to bat out 20 overs, they scored runs at a run rate of even less than six.

Here are the five lowest 20-over totals in the IPL history.

5.RCB – 96/9 vs Rising Pune Supergiant, IPL 2017

The Royal Challengers Bangalore are the only team in IPL history to get bowled out for less than 50 runs. They stand at the fifth position on this list courtesy of their disappointing second innings performance against the Rising Pune Supergiant in IPL 2017.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, RCB bowled decently in Pune, conceding 157/3 in 20 overs. They made a good start with the bat, and at one point, they were 32/1. However, after AB de Villiers departed to the pavilion, none of the batsmen could support Virat Kohli. The RCB skipper scored a 48-ball 55 as RCB only managed 96/9 in 20 overs.

4.KXIP – 95/9 vs Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2015

The Chennai Super Kings battled the Kings XI Punjab for the first time after the IPL 2014 Qualifier 2 match. CSK batted first at Chepauk and scored 192/3 riding on MS Dhoni’s 27-ball 41*.

Chasing a target of 193 runs, KXIP lost Virender Sehwag in the first over. Shaun Marsh and Murali Vijay tried to build a partnership, but the trio of Ashish Nehra, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja did not allow the KXIP batsmen easy runs. The visitors finished with 95/9 in 20 overs, losing by 97 runs.

3.MI – 94/8 vs Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2011

The Mumbai Indians had made it to the final of the 2010 season, but in the subsequent season, the Rajasthan Royals restricted them to just 94 runs in 20 overs. This match happened at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur.

The home team elected to bat first and Johan Botha’s 3/6 did not allow MI any momentum. Only two sixes were hit in the entire innings as they ended with 94/8 in 20 overs. Botha later scored a 39-ball 45 to guide RR home with seven wickets in hand.

2.KXIP – 92/8 vs Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2009

The Kings XI Punjab hold the record for the lowest 20-overs total in the second innings of an IPL match. The Mohali-based franchise restricted CSK to a score of just 116/9 in 20 overs.

A combined effort from the CSK bowlers ensured that they defended the target in the second innings. KXIP only scored 92/8 despite having the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Simon Katich, and Kumar Sangakkara in the XI.

1.KKR – 84/8 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2020

The Kolkata Knight Riders created an embarrassing record of the lowest 20-overs total in IPL history by scoring just 84 runs against RCB. Mohammed Siraj bowled a dream spell to keep KKR down to 84/8.

The Bangalore-based franchise recorded its second win of the IPL 2020 season over KKR. Siraj deservedly won the Player of the Match award.
