New Zealand will battle the Indian cricket team in a three-match T20I series, starting tonight at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. The Blackcaps have named a second-string squad for this series. Big names like Kane Williamson, Tim Southee and Trent Boult are absent from the squad named for the three T20Is.
Interestingly, the selectors have named five such players in the squad who were not even born in New Zealand. Here’s a list of the five players born outside NZ who will represent the Blackcaps in the upcoming series against the Indian cricket team.
1. Mark Chapman will play for New Zealand
Mark Chapman was born in Hong Kong and even represented the Asian side at the international level. He has moved to NZ now and plays for the Blackcaps. He even represented the team in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
2. Glenn Phillips will play for New Zealand
Many South Africa-born cricketers have left their nation for a better future in cricket. One of them is wicket-keeper batter Glenn Phillips, who plays for the Blackcaps now.
3. Devon Conway
Another South Africa-born cricketer to feature on this list is Devon Conway. The left-handed batter tried hard to make it to South Africa’s team but after being rejected he decided to leave his nation.
4. Michael Rippon
Michael Rippon is a left-arm wrist-spin bowling all-rounder from South Africa. He first played for the Netherlands in international cricket before moving to NZ. Rippon could make an impact in the upcoming series against the Indian cricket team.
5. Ish Sodhi
Ish Sodhi was born in Ludhiana, India. He plays for the Blackcaps at the international level and has played brilliantly in matches against the Indian cricket team. Sodhi is a leg-spinner, who has played 88 T20I matches, scalping 111 wickets at an economy rate of 8.03.
