Chennai Super Kings had a difficult IPL 2020. One of the major reasons for their failure was that the senior players were not performing. However, in IPL 2021, with a little infusion of youth, the team is doing well. There could be plenty of changes for IPL 2022, though. In this article, we talk about five players whom CSK might retain for IPL 2022.

CSK will inevitably have to take a few tough decisions. There are plenty of players in the squad who are not performing consistently. A few of them are old and may not feature in the forthcoming campaigns. In the previous editions, IPL has allowed for retainment of 3 capped players before the auction and 2 capped players using RTM. This might continue for the upcoming years as well.

1. Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja is definitely one of the players whom CSK might retain for IPL 2022. It will not be a surprise if Jaddu even captains the unit for future editions. He has been in the franchise for quite a long time and is also at the peak of his career. Jaddu is performing in every department of the game and will be the one around whom CSK must build their squad for IPL 2022 and beyond.

2. Faf du Plessis

It is not easy to get overseas openers who perform consistently. Faf du Plessis has been doing that and would be in the discussions regarding retainment. Although he is also a little old, he is certainly fit enough to play the next three editions. Also, he comes in with a bit of captaincy experience, which would be useful in the leadership group. The batting department might be made to revolve around him, and hence, he can be retained.

3. Sam Curran

It should be all about the future for Chennai Super Kings. Till now, Sam Curran has shown that he can be a real deal in the T20 format. He is a good power play bowler and a powerful batsman in the unit. The Englishman is also a useful fielder. With him in the squad, there will be a lot of options for the captain. Hence, CSK might try to retain him for IPL 2022. If not retainment, the franchise must at least target to buy him back using an RTM card.

4. Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina has retired from international cricket and is also not that active in domestic competitions. Everyone felt he would be rusty in IPL 2021. However, the southpaw has been brilliant so far. There are flashes of his old self, something that might excite the CSK fans. Although it’s a risky move, for his experience in the format, Raina could be one of the players whom CSK might retain for IPL 2022. If that happens, he could be a captaincy contender, as well.

5. Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali has been doing well ever since he has donned the yellow jersey. Batting at No.3, Moeen has performed well with the bat and has also provided occasional breakthroughs with the ball. He can be one for the future, at least for the next three-year cycle. Hence, CSK can retain Moeen Ali for IPL 2022.
