The Chennai Super Kings are the most consistent team in the Indian Premier League history. Although the 2020 season has not been up to the mark for CSK, they can still be backed to come back stronger in the remaining matches. CSK are still in the race to the playoffs, and if they win their next four matches, they can qualify if some results go in their favor.

Talking about CSK, the franchise have been home to some great players of the game like Stephen Fleming, Matthew Hayden, Makhaya Ntini, and other overseas stars. Apart from the international names, veteran Indian players like Lakshmipathy Balaji, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, and others have donned the CSK jersey in the IPL.

MS Dhoni has been the leader of this team since day one and Chinna Thala Suresh Raina has been his deputy. Former international cricket team captains like Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, and DJ Bravo are a part of the team in IPL 2020. Since Dhoni has achieved so much success as the skipper, the other leaders have played the supporting role at CSK.

However, not every franchise has a captain like Dhoni, and they need to look for other options. In this article, we will look at the five players who first played for CSK and then became IPL team captains.

1.Parthiv Patel

Gujarat-born wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel started his IPL career with the Chennai Super Kings in the year 2008. He kept the wickets for the team in a few matches until the 2010 season.

The southpaw moved to the Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the 2011 seasons. The team had selected Mahela Jayawardene as its first captain, but when he was unavailable for one match, Patel led KTK against CSK.

2.Ravichandran Ashwin

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is another player who began his IPL career with the Chennai Super Kings. He was one of the most successful bowlers of the team.

When CSK got suspended, Ashwin became a part of Rising Pune Supergiant. Subsequently, the Kings XI Punjab signed him and elected him as their new skipper.

3.George Bailey

Former Australian T20I skipper George Bailey had first earned an IPL deal from the Chennai Super Kings. He did not impress much in the few chances he got to play for CSK.

Bailey later switched to the Kings XI Punjab franchise and soon became the team’s captain. Under his captaincy, the team made it to its first IPL final in 2014.

4.Murali Vijay

Yet another batsman who first played for the Chennai Super Kings and later captained the Kings XI Punjab is Murali Vijay. The Tamil Nadu batsman was a match-winner for CSK in the first few seasons.

After his exit from CSK, Vijay represented the Delhi Capitals and the Kings XI Punjab. He had a brief captaincy stint at KXIP, which was not so successful.

5.Suresh Raina

As mentioned ahead, Chinna Thala Suresh Raina has been the deputy of MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings. He has also led the team in a few matches when Dhoni was not available.

After CSK received a suspension in 2015, Raina became a part of the Gujarat Lions team. The Rajkot-based franchise nominated him as their new captain.
