Just when every fan thought that Trent Boult will never play for New Zealand again, the star fast bowler has returned to the Blackcaps squad. New Zealand have named Boult in the squad for the England series. It is pertinent to note that Boult rejected a central contract from NZC to focus on T20 leagues.
However, Cricket World Cup is one such tournament, which every cricketer dreams to play for. Although a lot of players have shifted their attention towards T20 leagues now, it is likely that the following five players may return to the ODI squad for the mega event.
1. Faf du Plessis can come back like Trent Boult
Former South African captain Faf du Plessis understands the conditions in India well. He has not played for the Proteas since long, but it will be great for the South African side if a player like du Plessis is selected.
2. Usman Khawaja can come back like Trent Boult
Usman Khawaja had a memorable tour of India during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With Marnus Labuschagne dropped, there is a spot vacant in the top-order of Australia. Khawaja, who has not played ODIs since the 2019 World Cup, can be considered.
3. Mohammad Amir
Amid reports of Mohammad Amir becoming a British citizen, Inzamam-ul-Haq has become the new chief selector of Pakistan. If Inzamam convinces Amir to make a return, the left-arm fast bowler can don the green jersey at the mega event.
4. Prasidh Krishna
Express pace bowler Prasidh Krishna has not played ODIs for India since the Zimbabwe tour last year. He has recovered from his back injury and will return to the field in T20Is against Ireland. If he impresses against Ireland, Krishna can play for the Indian team in the mega event.
5. Roelof van der Merwe
Netherlands all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe has not played ODI cricket since November 2021. However, the Dutch team can consider him for the mega event because of his experience of playing in India. He has represented South Africa against India in the past and also played in IPL.
