BCCI announced the Indian T20I squad for the upcoming five-match away series against West Indies. Since it is an ODI World Cup year, the selectors have decided to rest the senior players like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma for this series. Interestingly, Shubman Gill, who is an all-format player, is a part of the squad.
BCCI selection committee’s new chairman Ajit Agarkar was in action for the first time in his new job today. While he has picked a decent squad for the away series, here are five deserving players who were unlucky to miss out on a place in the T20I team.
1. Rinku Singh deserved a call-up to the Indian T20I squad
After a come long time, a left-handed batter has come in India who can bat in middle-order, field well and hit sixes at will. A player like Rinku Singh does not come around every now and then. West Indies could have been the perfect place for his debut.
2. Rahul Tewatia deserved a call-up to the Indian T20I squad
India lacks finishers in the shortest format of the game. Someone like Rahul Tewatia, who has mastered the art of finishing in the Indian Premier League, deserved a call-up to the team.
3. Mohit Sharma
Another Gujarat Titans player to feature on this list is Mohit Sharma. The right-arm pacer did an excellent job for GT in the death overs. His variations could have troubled West Indies batters a lot.
4. Ruturaj Gaikwad
It is tough to understand why Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has done a great job in IPL, has been selected for ODIs and Tests but not in T20Is. Gaikwad can become a player like Shubman Gill if backed well. BCCI have preferred Yashasvi Jaiswal over him.
5. Varun CV
Mystery spinner Varun CV showed a lot of improvement in IPL 2023. BCCI considered him worthy enough to play in T20 World Cup 2021, but they have not given him a single chance after that. A player like Varun can be an asset for India in T20Is.
