West Indies team has achieved enormous success in the past. However, of late the team has struggled to get going. In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 competition, the Caribbean outfit was knocked out in the first round itself after losing against Scotland and Ireland.
After the West Indies team’s early exit from the mega event, the head coach Phil Simmons announced that he would step down as the head coach after the ICC World Test Championship series against Australia scheduled to take place after the T20 World Cup 2022.
“From a personal perspective this is not a knee jerk reaction, but a move I have been considering for some time and now is the time to make public that I will step down as West Indies Head Coach at the end of the Test series against Australia,” said Simmons.
WI now needs a new head coach who can revive the team. Here are the top five candidates for the job:
1. Ashish Nehra
Ashish Nehra proved in IPL 2022 that he can use the available resources to perfection and transform a team into a champion squad. He can do wonders for WI cricket if he receives a chance.
2. Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy
Daren Sammy is a former two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain. If given the job, Sammy can be a master tactician for the Caribbean side.
3. Justin Langer
If CWI looks for someone outside Asia and Windies, Justin Langer is the best option available. He took Australia to the next level after the sandpaper incident and can do the same thing for the Men in Maroon.
4. Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle is one of the best T20 players of all time. He has seemingly retired from international cricket. Gayle could be a great coach as well as a mentor for the Windies squad.
5. Eoin Morgan
Eoin Morgan was in the talks with an IPL franchise to become a coach recently. Like Sammy, he is a master tactician who can take the team to another level.
