The Indian Premier League is the number one T20 competition on earth, with players from across the world dreaming to contracts from the IPL teams. It is one thing to become a part of a squad and completely another to lead a franchise. The franchise has a worth in millions, and to become the face of that brand is a huge achievement.
A majority of the captains in the Indian Premier League history have been Indians, but teams have not shied away from naming overseas players as skippers as well. Over the last 15 years, a total of five players from South Africa have got the honor of being an IPL team captain. Here’s a list of those five cricketers.
1. Aiden Markram will captain SRH in IPL 2023
The most recent entry on this list is Aiden Markram. The SunRisers Hyderabad named him as their captain for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. Markram will make his captaincy debut in the league.
2. JP Duminy captained DD in IPL 2015 and 2016
Former South African all-rounder JP Duminy represented multiple franchises in his career. Only one of them, namely Delhi Daredevils assigned him the team’s reins in 2015 and 2016.
3. Faf du Plessis
Faf du Plessis is one of the most successful South African players in the league’s history. He never got a chance to captain CSK, but RCB named him as their captain last year.
4. David Miller
Current Gujarat Titans star David Miller was once a member of the Punjab Kings team. The Mohali-based franchise named him their captain in 2016, but Miller won one of the six matches as skipper.
5. Shaun Pollock
The first South African player to captain in this league was Shaun Pollock. Mumbai Indians appointed him as their skipper in the 2008 season.
