Now, we will look at some unnoticed coincidences between 2022 T20 World Cup and 1992 World Cup.
The 1992 World Cup was the first to be played under light and in colored jerseys. Here’s a list of five similarities between the two mega events.
1. Australia were the defending champions of 1992 World Cup
Australia had won the 1987 World Cup in India. They entered the 1992 edition of the mega event as the defending champions but failed to qualify for the semifinals.
2. Rain was the villain for South Africa in 1992 World Cup
Rain has always troubled the South African team at ICC events. In 1992, due to Most Productive Overs method, their equation in semifinal against England came down from 22 runs from 13 balls to 22 runs from 1 ball.
3. Pakistan qualified for final of 1992 World Cup by defeating New Zealand
Pakistan made a shocking entry into the semifinals of both mega events and then qualified for the final by defeating New Zealand. Pakistan won that tournament. It remains to be seen if history repeats itself.
4. Melbourne Cricket Ground hosted the final
The final of the 1992 WC was at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Now, the final of 2022 T20 WC will also happen in Melbourne.
5. 1st World Cup on Australian soil
The first editions of ODI World Cup happened in England, and the fourth one in India. The fifth one was in Australia in the year 1992. Similarly, 2022 T20 WC is the first time Australia is hosting a T20 World Cup.
