Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians made a big announcement on social media today as they announced that the franchise’s head coach Mahela Jayawardene and director Zaheer Khan have been promoted to the global positions. Because of their promotions, the positions in the franchise are vacant now ahead of IPL 2023.
Mumbai Indians need a new head coach now, and here’s a look at the six candidates who could take over the position.
1. Ravi Shastri could become MI’s new head coach in IPL 2023
Former Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri was reportedly going to coach Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022. However, he did join the team. He is yet to join any team as a coach. Since MI is his home franchise, Shastri could join the team.
2. Anil Kumble has left PBKS ahead of IPL 2023
Former Punjab Kings head coach Anil Kumble has left his position at PBKS. Having had a stint with MI in the past, he could return to his old franchise.
3. Mark Boucher could coach MI in IPL 2023
Mark Boucher joined MI Cape Town as a head coach in SA20 League. He will leave the South African head coach’s position after the T20 World Cup, which means he will be available for the IPL if needed.
4. Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar has been the icon of the Mumbai Indians team after retiring from IPL. He could be a good option to become the new head coach of the team.
5. Sanath Jayasuriya
Former Mumbai Indians player Sanath Jayasuriya has tried his luck in coaching after retirement. He could return to his first franchise as a head coach in IPL 2023.
