7 players who only played for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL

The Chennai Super Kings have been one of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history. The Yellow Army hold the record for appearing in playoffs of ten out of the eleven seasons that they have played. Unfortunately, the Super Kings missed out on a Top 4 spot in IPL 2020. Still, they ended their campaign with some magnificent performances.

CSK have been home to some legendary names in world cricket like MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson, and several others. When CSK got banned in the year 2015, the mainstays of CSK switched to the Rising Pune Supergiant and the Gujarat Lions.

However, in this article, we will have a look at those seven players who only represented the Chennai Super Kings in their IPL careers.

1.Stephen Fleming

The current coach of the Chennai Super Kings team, Stephen Fleming played his only IPL season for the 3-time champions in the year 2008. The former New Zealand batsman has played an instrumental role in the team’s success over the last few years.

Fleming played ten matches for the Super Kings in the first IPL season. The left-handed batsman scored 196 runs for the team at an average of 21.78. His scoring rate was 118.79.

2.Suraj Randiv

Sri Lankan off-spinner Suraj Randiv played only one IPL season, and he won the trophy with the Chennai Super Kings that year. Randiv played eight games for CSK in 2011, scalping six wickets for the team.

His economy rate was 7.69, while his strike rate was 29. Randiv was unfortunately released by CSK before the 2012 season and then no other franchise showed interest in him.

3.Nuwan Kulasekara

Another Sri Lankan bowler who played only for the Chennai Super Kings in his IPL career is Nuwan Kulasekara. The right-arm medium pacer is famous for bowling the last ball of the 2011 World Cup to MS Dhoni.

Kulasekara played for the Super Kings in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He played six matches for the team, where he took five wickets at a decent economy rate of 7.06.

4.Doug Bollinger

Former Australian speedster made a name for himself with his marvelous performances for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Bollinger won two IPL trophies with CSK.

He donned the yellow jersey in 27 matches and picked up 37 wickets. Surprisingly, CSK did not retain him after the 2012 season culminated.

5.Matthew Hayden

Former IPL Orange Cap winner Matthew Hayden played three seasons for the Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2010. He made the Mongoose Bat popular during his IPL stint.

Hayden was one of the best batsmen for CSK in the first three seasons. He played 32 matches for the side and aggregated 1107 runs at an average of 36.90.

6.Joginder Sharma

The hero of India’s ICC T20 World Cup win in 2007, Joginder Sharma was a part of the Chennai Super Kings squad from 2008 to 2011. The all-rounder featured in 16 matches across the four seasons.

Sharma was a member of CSK’s two IPL winning squads. The right-arm medium pacer took 12 wickets with the ball, but his economy rate was 10.08.

7.Makhaya Ntini

Former South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini played his only IPL season for the Chennai Super Kings in 2008. Ntini recorded a hat-trick while playing against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

He got a chance to play nine matches for the MS Dhoni-led franchise. Ntini took seven wickets in those games and bowled two maiden overs for the team.
