South Africa is among the top cricketing nations in the world. Over the last few decades, the rainbow nation has produced some of the most talented cricketers of all time. Players like AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Jonty Rhodes, Dale Steyn, Albie Morkel and several others are extremely popular outside South Africa as well.
Because of the enormous cricketing talent available in the rainbow nation, not every cricketer gets an opportunity to play for the national team. Some of them either moved to another nation at an early age or decided to do so after growing up. Here’s a list of eight cricketers who were born in South Africa but are playing for another team in T20 World Cup 2022.
1. David Wiese, Namibia
All-rounder David Wiese once played for the Proteas. He was a part of their squad in 2016 T20 World Cup, but in 2021 and 2022, he has represented Namibia.
2. Curtis Campher, Ireland
Another pace bowler to feature on this list is Ireland’s Curtis Campher. He achieved the rare feat of taking a double hat-trick at T20 World Cup in 2021.
3. Graham Hume, Ireland
Another Ireland squad member to feature on the list is Graham Hume. He is yet to receive enough opportunities to prove himself at the mega event.
4. Jan Frylinck, Namibia
There are three players from South Africa in the Namibian squad. The second one is Jan Frylinck, who is a left-arm fast-medium bowler.
5. Ruben Trumpelmann, Namibia
Another Namibian fast bowler who was born in SA is Ruben Trumpelmann. He played for the Namibian side in last year’s T20 World Cup as well.
6. Devon Conway, New Zealand
Devon Conway played a lot of domestic cricket in SA before making the decision to move to New Zealand. He is one of their best players now.
7. Stephan Myburgh, Netherlands
Netherlands’ opening batter Stephan Myburgh earned everyone’s attention with his whirlwind batting in T20 World Cup 2014. He is one of the oldest players at this year’s T20 WC.
8. Roelof van der Merwe, Netherlands
Like David Wiese, Roelof van der Merwe played for the Proteas before. However, now he plays for the Netherlands team.
