T20 World Cup is one of the most exciting tournaments in the world. The Super 8s round of the ongoing T20 WC ended last night in St. Vincent with an epic match between Bangladesh and Afghanistan. After lots of drama, Afghanistan edged Bangladesh via D/L method and made history by qualifying for the semifinals.
This marks the first time the Afghanistan cricket team will play in the semifinals round of any marquee ICC event. While Afghanistan have played top-quality cricket and made it to the semifinals, there are still two such teams in the tournament’s history who have never won a match. Here’s a list of those two teams.
1. Papua New Guinea have a 100% losing record in T20 World Cup matches
Papua New Guinea is a small country from the Oceania region of the world. PNG made its first-ever T20 WC appearance in 2021, where Oman hammered them by 10 wickets. Later in the group stage, PNG went down in matches against Scotland and Bangladesh to finish last in their group.
They could not qualify for the 2022 T20 WC but came back in 2024 T20 WC. Although debutants Uganda were in their group, PNG ended up losing to them as well as West Indies, New Zealand and Afghanistan to crash out with four losses.
2. Kenya
African nation Kenya made history by qualifying for the 2003 WC semifinals. Four years later, they participated in the inaugural T20 World Cup as well. However, much to the Kenyan fans’ disappointment, their team lost both the group stage matches against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
After the inaugural T20 WC, Kenya have never qualified for the major event. The Kenyan team even failed to qualify for the T20 WC in 2024 even though there were 20 teams in the tournament.
