The first match of the ICC World Test Championship series between the England cricket team and the New Zealand cricket team is underway right now, where both teams’ batters have failed to make an impact. Fast bowlers enjoyed bowling at the Lord’s cricket ground on Day 1 of the ICC World Test Championship series between the England cricket team and the New Zealand cricket team.
Interestingly though, Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to have a bat first in London. The visitors got off to a disastrous start as the duo of James Anderson and debutant Matty Potts wreaked havoc at the Mecca of Cricket. The two pacers combined to take eight wickets as New Zealand were bundled out for just 132 runs in the first innings.
In reply, the home team got off to a good start and was 92/2 at one stage. However, the New Zealand cricket team picked up five wickets in quick succession as England slipped to 100/7. Colin de Grandhomme initiated the collapse by dismissing Joe Root, while Tim Southee and Trent Boult joined in later. Eventually, the home side had 116/7 on the board at the end of Day 1.
“It was a great debut. Nice to get some wickets early on to settle the nerve. We bowled aggressively and looked to take wickets. It’s a massive thing. A lot of my success is down to my family and I’m over the moon with it. Little bit of a tear in the eye early on this morning,” debutant Matty Potts told Sky after the end of Day 1.
Fans react as England suffer another collapse in Test cricket
The ongoing WTC cycle has been a forgettable one for the English squad, especially for their batters. Except Joe Root, the English batters have failed to score runs consistently.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to their latest collapse:
92 for 2 to 100 for 7 – England 5 wickets in last 8 runs.
