The 1st Test of the ICC World Test Championship series between the Bangladesh cricket team and the South African cricket team happened this week at Kingsmead. The Bangladesh cricket team recently won an ICC Cricket World Cup Super League series against the South African cricket team.
Since most of the South African stars were unavailable for the ICC World Test Championship series because of the Indian Premier League, many fans felt that this was Bangladesh team’s best chance to register a Test series win on South African soil. The cricket universe should note that the Mominul Haque-led outfit had defeated the New Zealand cricket team in an away Test match earlier this year.
However, the Asian side could not trouble Dean Elgar and his men much. They won the toss and elected to field first. A 93-run knock from Temba Bavuma helped the South African team post a 367-run total on the board in the first innings. In reply, Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s 137-run knock guided Bangladesh to a 298-run first-innings score.
Bangladesh bowled South Africa out for 204 runs in the second innings and received a 274-run target to win. Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer combined forces to take 10 wickets in 19 overs as Bangladesh were bowled out for just 53 runs in their second innings.
After winning Man of the Match award for his 7-wicket haul in the 2nd innings, Maharaj said:
“Quite emotional as I could get the team for victory at home. It was all about being patient and getting my line and lengths right. As cricketers we get impatient when we bowl long spells but it is the hard work from the first innings that payed off in the second.”
Fans on Twitter react as South African spinners destroy Bangladesh in 2nd innings
Here are some of the top Twitter reactions to Bangladesh’s embarrassing show against the Proteas spinners:
Did anyone saw a scorecard like #SAvsBAN in the 150 years of #Test #Cricket? Two spinners only used to bowl out #Bangladesh for 53! pic.twitter.com/3qtRTyCfV9

Keshav Maharaj deservedly won player of the match, but what a performance also by Simon Harmer. Match figures of 7/124 in 49 overs. He is a brilliant spinner.#SAvBAN #SAvsBAN

Keshav Maharaj. Absolutely brilliant. Great mention to Simon. They have complimented each other well and have won this one for us. Always said on a turning wicket you want us to bat first and bowl last. We needed this sort of win, a dominating one.#ProteaFire #SAvsBAN #SScricket
