Five IPL hattricks that are rarely known to Cricket fans

Indian Premier League has housed several talents which probably did not see the light of the day due to limited opportunities or unexpected dalliance with inconsistency. However, a handful opportunities or not, the gem of performances produced by the stars will always be etched onto the golden pages of this domestic extravaganza.

One such feat which leaves an indelible mark on the books no matter how many times it is registered is hattricks. Three wickets on three consecutive balls and bam! You are taking the match ball home. Similarly, there were a few bowlers in IPL who did manage to notch up hattricks but with time, came off the hooks for some reason or the other. We are going to honour five such bowlers who couldn’t make it big in IPL but those magical spells from them left the world stunned.

1. Makhaya Ntini

After weathering two overs of relentless aggression from the South African pace honcho that already bore witness to the dismissal of Mohammad Hafeez, Saurav Ganguly tried to fancy himself to play a late cut. An early timed shot with his stumps exposed let the screamer from Ntini rattle the timber in the most brutal ways. This came on the final delivery of his third over.

Dhoni introduced Ntini back in the 17th over to break the partnership between Debabrata Das and Salman Butt. Das failing to connect with the yorker was beaten by brute pace from Ntini that saw his leg stump going for a walk.

David Hussey completed Ntini’s hattrick as Hussey trying to angle the ball to the third man boundary, left the stumps exposed. Once again undone by pace, his off-stump was deracinated as Ntini claimed his first hattrick in IPL only to know it later in the match.

2. Rohit Sharma

Out of everyone, this will be the most surreal inclusion to this list. In one game for Deccan Chargers where they were pitted against Rohit’s future team, Mumbai Indians, their batting line up failed miserably as cameos from Gilchrist, Rohit and Venugopal Rao helped them to post a decent score.

After Mumbai awakening to a rude jolt from the Hyderabadi bowlers, Gilchrist introduced Rohit Sharma in the 16th over which was probably one of the most outlandish decisions of that IPL. However, much to everyone’s surprise, a straight ball bowled at Abhishek Nayar who actually anticipated the ball to move lost track of his balance and in the process, his timber was rattled. Next up was Harbhajan Singh who got a bit ambitious in the very first ball itself and wanted to go for the kill, attempting a flighted shot. However, he couldn’t connect and the ball clipped his off-stump to set up the hattrick plot for Sharma.

The third wicket in his string of brilliance was the set Duminy who was threatening to take the match away from the Chargers as another slower delivery down the leg was nicked by the South African southpaw and Gilchrist pouched a neat catch behind the stumps.

3. Praveen Kumar

The landslide in the Royals’ innings triggered by Praveen Kumar, started with the set wicket of Damien Martyn.

Kumar left Martyn stranded with a tame delivery that notched up slight movement after hitting the deck and went away from the Australian batsman to dislodge the bails.

Kumar struck again with another lovely slower delivery that was completely misread by Sumit Narwal who in the process holed out to Manish Pandey making it two from two for the medium pacer.

The third spoke in the wheel of hattrick for Kumar was Paras Dogra who was left befuddled by a stellar delivery that rattled through his defences like a tracer bullet.

4. Ajay Chandilla

As Royals locked horns with Pune, Chandilla removed Jesse Ryder and Saurav Ganguly in the very opening over, leaving Pune begging for some control.

Trying to hammer Chandilla to the stands, Ryder caught a thick edge that did get a significant loft and was pouched by a back-pedalling Watson in a convenient manner.

Ganguly was the next to walk back to the pavilion as his attempt to shimmy down the pitch struck him on his pad and went to Shreevats Goswami who removed the bails in a flash to put an end to his former Ranji Captain.

Chandilla completed his hattrick with another screamer as he followed Uthappa’s attempt to drive down the offside that drew him out of the crease and Sreevats once again completed a neat stumping to pump the game beyond any recognition for Pune.

5. Praveen Tambe

Notching up three crucial wickets in the 15th over, Watson paved the way for Praveen Tambe to chip in with a frugal over as KKR was reeling from the shock.

Showing zero common sense, Pandey started walking down the pitch even before Tambe could bowl his opener and he clipped it down the leg stump, conceding a wide and in the process, Samson removed the bails in a flash to make matters worse for KKR.

As the entire stand looked up to Yusuf Pathan to give them hope, he struck it back straight down the throat of Praveen Tambe as he went for a golden duck.

The last nail in the KKR coffin came from Tambe as his over-pitched delivery struck Doeschate on the shoe and the umpire believed that it would have gone to rattle the stumps.
