Two new franchises will join the competition. So far, the cities of the two new teams are not decided, but according to reports, Ahmedabad could likely get one of the two new teams. To put things simply, BCCI has not declared an official list of rules at the moment. However, we can consider that the rules of the 2018 mega auction could come into play again for the IPL Auction 2022.

Will BCCI use similar rules as 2018 for IPL Auction 2022?

In 2018, the IPL Governing Council allowed all eight franchises to retain maximum three players before the auction. They can retain total five players from their previous team, with two of them being through RTM. If a player retained only two players before the auction, then that team can even use three RTMs. However, if a team does not retain a player, then also they can use maximum three RTMs only.

So, the rule was that a team can get five players from its previous year’s squad. However, they had permission to use only maximum three retentions or three RTM Cards. Also, there was a limit of three capped Indian players through RTMs and retentions total. Suppose if Mumbai Indians retain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah then they will have to release Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya. They cannot even use RTM for them at the auction.

For the other slots, the franchise can still pick uncapped players and overseas cricketers. Like before the 2018 auction, the Royal Challengers Bangalore went with the trio of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Sarfaraz Khan. So, if these are the rules as per 2018, then the Mumbai Indians could lose out on some major names.

Will there will be same changes for IPL 2022 like the 2011 season?

So far in the 14 years of IPL, the 2011 edition of the league was the only one where there were ten teams. Now that 2022 will also have ten franchises, there could be a chance that there may be similar rules like the 2011 season. There was an increase in number of maximum players in a squad.

Also, there was a limit on the retentions. So, these are some changes we can get to see in the rules for the upcoming auction as compared to the auctions that have happened in the last three years.
