Reports are already out that BCCI has informed the franchises of IPL 2022 retainment rules. As per these reports, each team can retain a total of four cricketers. This could be a combination of two overseas and two domestic cricketers or three domestic players and one foreign cricketer. Two new teams would be coming in, and hence, the RTM option has been scrapped so that all teams start from the same line.

Of course, BCCI will not mandate retainments for the teams. The ball will be in the franchise’s court to make the decision. However, the option of retaining three domestic players and one overseas player is likely to be the strategy for most teams. As per this combination, here are four players which each team will pick as part of IPL 2022 retainment.

Chennai Super Kings – Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni and Sam Curran

If MS Dhoni makes himself eligible for IPL 2022, CSK will surely retain him. Ravindra Jadeja is another cricketer whom the three-time IPL winners will target to keep hold of. There are very few other domestic cricketers who merit a retainment. That said, keeping the future in mind, Ruturaj Gaikwad could be retained by CSK. Sam Curran is the best overseas option for CSK in this regard.

Delhi Capitals – Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw and Kagiso Rabada

Delhi is certain to go ahead with this combination. Pant and Iyer are sure retentions while Prithvi might pip Shikhar to be retained in the franchise. In the overseas names, considering he has done well for them, South African pacer Kagiso Rabada is likely to continue wearing the DC jersey.

Kolkata Knight Riders – Shubman Gill, Varun CV, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell

KKR could build their squad around Shubman Gill and Andre Russell for future editions. While they would be retained, Varun CV is likely to keep his spot, thanks to his brilliant performance in IPL 2020. With a crunch for experienced domestic batsmen, Dinesh Karthik could also be retained by KKR.

Mumbai Indians – Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard

This combination will suit Mumbai Indians very well, although they would have liked to retain one more Indian cricketer. Nevertheless, in Rohit, Hardik, Bumrah and Pollard, MI will have a core that can yet again target trophies in IPL 2022 and beyond.

Punjab Kings – KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Mayank Agarwal and Nicholas Pooran

While KL Rahul is certain to stay, it would be wise if PBKS keep Shami and Agarwal, as well. Once released, it could be hard to buy them back. In the overseas department, although he has been poor recently, Pooran is the best choice for IPL 2022 retainment.

Rajasthan Royals – Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, Chetan Sakariya and Jofra Archer

Rajasthan Royals will surely not pick this combination. However, if they think of it, they will retain Sanju Samson, Jofra Archer, Riyan Parag and Chetan Sakariya. In Parag and Sakariya, they can invest in two players for the future.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Mohammed Siraj and AB de Villiers

While Virat Kohli is a certain retainment, if AB de Villiers does not retire, he too will make the list. The other Indians who are in the race are Devdutt Padikkal, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal. DDP and Siraj look to be the best options at the moment.

Sunrisers Hyderabad – Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Manish Pandey and Rashid Khan

It would not be a surprise if Sunrisers Hyderabad does not retain a single domestic cricketer as part of IPL 2022 retainment. However, if they are obligated to go with this combination, Bhuvi, Nattu and Manish will stay at SRH. Amongst the overseas options, SRH could retain Rashid Khan, who if released to the auctions might be difficult to rehire.
