Indian Premier League (IPL) can easily be called the best T20 league on the planet. On a given day, any team can beat any team, and in this lies the beauty of this competition. The fact that we witness close games very often is the added evidence to the statement.

However, it is also a tournament where teams can quickly go off the radar. With a bad start or a run of losses in the middle, suddenly, your chances could look bleak in IPL. Every season, it is inevitable that one of two teams go through it. The ones who avoid it are those who usually become successful in the race.

As we are on this topic, in this article, we take a look at the least number of points achieved by each team in a single season of the competition.

Chennai Super Kings – 12 Points (IPL 2020)

To start with, we talk about the Chennai Super Kings. A squad that has reached playoffs in every single edition, CSK faced a rare failure in 2020. Although the writing on the wall could have been worse, the team managed a few good wins and posted a total of 12 points by the end of the campaign. Yet, this stat remains the lowest achievement in any single season of IPL before, for them. We are pretty sure they would look into things and come back stronger in the future editions.

Delhi Capitals/Delhi Daredevils – 4 Points (IPL 2014)

Although Delhi has been doing well, a few years ago, they were a severely underperforming team. In fact, back in 2014, the franchise could manage just a total of 4 points. They share this forgettable record with the Deccan Chargers. Delhi’s disastrous performance in 2014 was down to lack of form and not the inadequacy of skill. That season, they had the likes of Kevin Pieterson, JP Duminy, Quinton de Kock, Dinesh Karthik, Mayank Agarwal, Mohammed Shami, and yet failed to put on a good show.

Kings XI Punjab – 6 Points (IPL 2015)

Surely, no one would have expected Kings XI Punjab to accumulate just 6 points in 2015. Especially after the stellar IPL 2014 campaign, the franchise was regarded as one of the favorites in 2015. However, in the forgettable season, it was more of the wheels coming off an unstable automobile. The overseas stars could not find form, and the inexperienced Indians needed more support to show their skills.

Kolkata Knight Riders – 7 Points (IPL 2009)

A controversial squad at the start, KKR’s worst performance ever came in 2009. In South Africa, the team had infamously stripped captaincy from Sourav Ganguly and handed over it to Brendon McCullum. The move paid no dividends as the franchise struggled to stay afloat in the competition. The performance was disappointing, and eventually, the squad finished with just seven points.

Mumbai Indians – 11 Points (IPL 2009)

The most successful franchise in IPL, Mumbai’s worst-ever performance happened in 2009. They could muster just 11 points and failed to make it to the playoffs. Yet again, this was a season where Mumbai started badly and peaked at the end before points became insufficient to get to the final-4. Nevertheless, the team has managed to overcome with few trophies later on in the competition.

Rajasthan Royals – 11 Points (IPL 2019)

Although Rajasthan Royals often go under the radar, it needs to be noted that every season, they have scored a minimum of 11 points. Their worst performance, surprisingly, happened in 2019 when they posted 11 points on the table. Despite getting a point extra in 2020, they have finished last in the points table, a feat they had avoided last season.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – 7 Points (IPL 2017)

The perennial under-achievers, RCB’s seven-point campaign in 2017 happens to be their worst show in IPL history. Much like KXIP in 2015, very few had expected RCB to turn up as they did in 2017, after a stellar campaign in 2016. Although injuries to key players like KL Rahul did hamper them, RCB’s display was nevertheless disappointing in 2017.

Sunrisers Hyderabad/Deccan Chargers – 4 Points (IPL 2008)

Sunrisers Hyderabad have done well in almost every season, but their predecessors had a forgettable campaign in the first edition. Despite having a star-studded squad, Deccan Chargers had a difficult time adjusting to the nuances of the competition. That said, they negated all their bad performances with a title-winning campaign the subsequent season in South Africa.
