On Sunday, January 7, MI Cape Town announced the appointment of Kieron Pollard as their captain for the upcoming season of SA20, commencing on January 10 in South Africa.
Despite being an integral part of Mumbai Indians in the inaugural edition and playing under Rashid Khan, MI Cape Town confirmed Rashid’s unavailability for the 2024 season due to recovery from back surgery.
Kieron Pollard, also serving as the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians, previously captained MI Emirates in the inaugural edition of ILT20, the T20 league in the UAE.
MI Cape Town expressed their wishes for Rashid Khan’s swift recovery and indicated their anticipation to have him back on the field soon.
Pollard, recently leading New York Strikers to victory in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, will now captain all four Mumbai Indians franchises, including MI, MI New York (Major League Cricket), MI Emirates, and MI Cape Town.
Meanwhile, Rashid Khan underwent minor surgery for a back injury in November, missing the Big Bash League 13 season. Despite being named in Afghanistan’s squad for a 3-match series against India starting January 11, the Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed that the leg-spinner, also their T20I captain, may not participate in any game. Ibrahim Zadran will continue leading the side after their 2-1 series win in the UAE.
