Since Root has left the captaincy position, it now means that the final Test of the World Test Championship series between the Indian cricket team and the England cricket team will see neither Virat Kohli nor Root as the captain. Both led their respective teams in the first four matches of the series, where England won one and India won two.

After that series, the England cricket team played an away ICC World Test Championship series against the Australian cricket team and one against the West Indies cricket team, losing both of them. After the tour of the West Indies, Root made up his mind to quit as the Test captain.

“After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England Men’s Test captain. It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right,” Root was quoted as saying in a press release by ECB.
