Joe Root has surprisingly decided to step down as the captain of the England Test cricket team earlier today. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) informed the fans about the big decision with a press release on their official website.
Since Root has left the captaincy position, it now means that the final Test of the World Test Championship series between the Indian cricket team and the England cricket team will see neither Virat Kohli nor Root as the captain. Both led their respective teams in the first four matches of the series, where England won one and India won two.
After that series, the England cricket team played an away ICC World Test Championship series against the Australian cricket team and one against the West Indies cricket team, losing both of them. After the tour of the West Indies, Root made up his mind to quit as the Test captain.
“After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England Men’s Test captain. It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right,” Root was quoted as saying in a press release by ECB.

Joe Root was fantastic with the bat even when he was leading the team. Maybe we can see a beast in him in upcoming days.

The end of the Root Era. Even as results nosedived, some remarkable numbers:
— Nick Friend (@NickFriend1) April 15, 2022
– 40 scores of 50+ (14 tons) in 64 games as captain
– 5,295 runs – more than any other England skipper (and behind only Smith, Border, Ponting, Kohli) https://t.co/ZtQd3jkSwF
Kohli and Root should captain their countries for this fifth Test. A chance to finish what they started. https://t.co/pLiWXuRAzh
